Almost Worth Knowing: The Amethyst Initiative - To Lower the Drinking Age
Well, I think this is a great idea... but mostly just so many of my friends will be allowed to go to the bars with me.
The Amethyst Initiative is a movement towards lowering the drinking age to 18, with the hopes that it will decrease binge drinking and address the fact that most college kids are breaking the law for doing something they almost all do. I won't get all political about it, but over 110 college presidents have publically supported the action, while MADD and the American Medical Association have opposed it.
Obviously, there are several sides to the issue. I think America dug itself a pretty deep hole ages ago by making alcohol something of a forbidden fruit to America's youth, but a simple action like lowering the drinking age will only make things worse before they make them better. Perhaps, the fact that they will make them better is enough. In any case, I just thought the issue was a neat one. Final Note: The Amethyst Initiative is interestingly named after the belief ancient Greeks held that amethyst warded off drunkenness. I wonder if it also helps with the Asian Rosacea.
